Dawson City, Yukon rose to lasting fame during the Klondike Gold Rush, from 1896 to 1899. Situated at the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers, Dawson was the starting point for the hopeful prospectors on their way to the newly discovered Klondike gold fields, and for those few who actually struck it rich, Dawson was the first place they came to spend their money on their way back out. Modern day Dawson City maintains the ambiance of the gold rush days, with boardwalks and wooden storefronts, some nicely restored and gaily painted, others weathered, and looking their age.

      If you go:
Dawson City has an active tourist industry and a lively night life, including stage shows and a casino, Diamond Tooth Gertie's, with staff and performers in period costume and a gold rush era theme to the festivities. Accommodations in Dawson run the gamut from B&B's to Victorian Inns to RV Parks. And you can still find real gold miners drinking up their profits in the Saloons.
