Just south of Yukon Crossing, a group of conglomerate rock pillars in the middle of the Yukon River splits the watercourse into swiftly moving channels known as the Five Finger Rapids. The rapids were a significant hazard to navigation in the days when the river was the main transportation corridor to Dawson City and points north.
If you go:
The Klondike Highway runs alongside the Yukon River between Carmacks and Yukon Crossing. There's a parking area and an observation platform marking the Five Finger Rapids Recreation Area. It's well worth pulling over for the beautiful view.
