The Klondike Highway runs from Skagway, on the coast of Alaska, to Dawson City, in the Yukon, a total distance of 440 miles. The highway roughly parallels the route taken by tens of thousands of hopeful prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1890's. Those who are driving to Alaska on the Alaska Highway have the option of a detour known as the Klondike Loop. Instead of staying on the Alcan from Whitehorse, through Beaver Creek, to Tok, in Alaska, you can take the Klondike Highway north from Whitehorse to Dawson City. Then you cross the Yukon River on the George Black Ferry, follow the Top of the World Highway from Dawson to Chicken, Alaska, and then take the Taylor Highway south from Chicken to Tok. The Klondike Loop adds 102 miles to your trip, along with a fascinating glimpse of history and some spectacular scenery.

      If you go:
The Klondike Highway is open year around, but the Klondike Loop is only open in the summer. (The customs post on the Top of the World Highway closes for the season in mid-September). The highway from Whitehorse to Dawson City is paved and in good condition. It's a beautiful, almost empty road, with very little traffic. Services outside the major towns are few and far between.
