It's hard to believe that just a few miles from downtown Oakland is an outdoor getaway that seems worlds removed from the bustle of city life. Chabot Park is a hilly, wooded refuge full of challenging and scenic hiking and biking trails. There are also campsites available, including some with full hookups. About the only intrusions of civilization that might disturb your peace in this 3300 acre park are the occasional sounds of gunfire coming from the park's shooting range operated by the Chabot Gun Club, where you can do some shooting yourself if you're into that. The park is in the hills overlooking Lake Chabot, where you can rent boats and kayaks.
If you go:
Campground open year-round. Reservations recommended, especially during peak season. The campfire programs presented by park rangers are often a fun family outing while camping here.
