The original Kalmar Nyckel, built around 1625 in Amsterdam, made an impressive four voyages to the New World, and was instrumental in the founding of New Sweden, a settlement that includes present-day Delaware. This replica is created in painstakingly authentic detail, with a few subtle modern conveniences thrown in. From April to October, it sails along the East Coast from Cape Charles, Virgina to Provincetown, Massachusetts with its trained crew. In its various ports, the public can take a tour or go on a cruise. During the winter, it docks in its Wilmington home, where the public can tour it on weekends. There's also an informative museum at the Wilmington shipyard. Pirate cruises are offered at selected times.
If you go:
The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, where the ship docks in Wilmington, and which houses the museum, is open 10 to 4 Monday through Friday and 10 to 2 on Saturday. If you live in the Wilmington area, or are going to be there for an extended time, you might be able to attend training sessions to become one of the Kalmar Nyckel's volunteer crew!
