Unlike many towns and cities that grew up as a result of gold mining in the late 19th century, Idaho City remains an active community to this day, with modern businesses and private homes sitting alongside a wealth of historic buildings. Pick up the walking tour guide from the visitor center and explore the dozens of original properties that line the city's two main streets. Highlights include the 1871 courthouse (still in use today), the 1867 Idaho World newspaper building, and the Boise Basin Museum (open 11.00-4.00 from Memorial Day to Labor Day).

      If you go:
The city suffered disastrous fires in 1865 and 1867 but was rebuilt both times, many buildings still standing today. Sadly, another major fire consumed an entire block in June 2015, and this was later confirmed as arson.
