A car lot in the casino city of West Wendover, Nevada might seem an unlikely place to find one of the USA's most important historic sites but if you walk to the corner of the Montego Bay hotel you'll find a plaque and telegraph pole marking the point where, on June 17, 1914, the last two wires were spliced to complete the country's first transcontinental telephone line.

      If you go:
It may lack the glamour and certainly the reenactions of the Golden Spike at Promontory Point, Utah (where the railroads met) but this telegraph pole is in its own way perhaps even more significant in terms of America's history. This location is on the historic Lincoln Highway.
