Established atop a 367-foot high mesa some eight centuries ago, the Acoma Pueblo is possibly the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in North America. A 90-minute guided tour covering three-fourths of a mile provides a view of the historic Sky City settlement and the San Esteban del Rey Mission. The Cultural Center and Museum are a good way to learn more about the people and their history, and to see their artwork. You can even purchase Native crafts to take home.
If you go:
Open all year, except for certain dates. Call ahead to verify availability. No smoking on the property. No video or sound recording, and still photography requires a permit. See website for other strictly enforced etiquette guidelines. Getting to the Pueblo requires a steep drive uphill. The walking tour of Sky City can be strenuous, especially in summer.
