If you think all state parks are alike, you need to spend some time in Purgatory. The Chasm is a hiking trail over boulders that seem to be carefully placed to provide a balance between challenge and accessibility. If you're among the more daring sort, you can climb up a cliff 70 feet high, provided you have a permit and the equipment to do so, crawl through dark tunnels, and work your way through challenging rock formations like Fat Man's Misery. For almost any age and level of adventure, this is one of the more fun hikes you'll ever take.

      If you go:
Free admission. Open every day except when cold meather makes climbing too hazardous. Wear comfortable hiking footwear with good traction. Make certain that all gear is secure, as you otherwise might drop it into places where it might be difficult to retrieve. No food or beverages allowed on the trails. A snack canteen is parked at the trailhead.by the picnic pavilion.
