Santa Fe has a population of only about 69,000, but it's a hive of activity. Within an area of a few blocks, you can admire treasures of art, architecture, cultural heritage and culinary skill. Long a haven for artists, the city boasts dozens of galleries with works of art for viewing and for sale. Native American artisans sell their jewelry in the plaza by the Palace Of Governors. As the nation's oldest state capital, Santa Fe features landmark buildings including the oldest residence in America and some of the oldest churches. One of these is the San Miguel Mission, in which you can ring a bell that was cast in Europe in the Fourteenth Century. There is easy access to the capitol complex even when the legislature is in session, and the corridors are lined with intriguing works of contemporary art. When you work up an appetite, there are plenty of fine restaurants around. Just be aware that it may be difficult to browse in the many fascinating shops without being tempted to buy something. So pack and budget accordingly.

There are many festivals and special events that take place in Santa Fe. One of the most interesting is The Burning Of Zozobra, a giant figure also known as Old Man Gloom, which occurs in September and has been a tradition since 1926.
