The legend of the Bear Lake Monster, America's own Nessie, stretches back into native American folklore with tales of a monster lurking beneath the surface, emerging only to devour the occasional brave. Settlers first heard this story in 1863 and the monster has been spotted on numerous occasions since then. Eye-witness descriptions vary: snake-like, a gigantic alligator, an ancient dinosaur, or (perhaps most plausible of all) like a large fish. One thing's for sure, they take the Bear Lake Monster very seriously here on the Idaho-Utah border.
