California Dreaming - Greenville, South Carolina

California Dreaming is a chain of nine restaurants in South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. But the Greenville location is housed in a distinctive building designed in a medieval castle motif, complete with a drawbridge to the entrance. Although nothing except the wine list is particularly Californian, the cuisine is tasty and imaginative. The portobello ravioli and the hot vegetable salad are especially worth trying, and the appetizers such as onion ring loaf and nachos smothered in cheese spinach dip can just about fill you up by themselves. But be sure to leave room for dessert -- the key lime pie is phenomenal.

If you go:
Open every day for lunch and dinner until 10:00 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday until 11:00. The one drawback of dining here is that the lighting can be so dim it's difficult to read the menu..
