• Vinalhaven Island - Vinalhaven, Maine

      Vinalhaven Island is 12 miles off the coast of Maine. It is home to the small village of Vinalhaven. If you take a car you can explore the island. Walk-on passengers can take the walking tour of Vinalhaven and visit village stores, the Vinalhaven Historical Society Museum and hike to Lawson Quarry. Swim at your own risk. A bicycle would allow you to see more. The island has 1200 year-round residents and many more summer visitors and residents plus is home to one of the largest lobster fishing fleets in the world. It is famous for its granite quarries and granite from Vinalhaven was used for many monuments and buildings in the eastern half of the country during the 1800s. Be sure to see the "galamander" that was used to move huge columns of granite.

      You can download a visitor's brochure at the Chamber of Commerce website that shows the roads and has a map and walking tour of the town of Vinalhaven. Two ferries from the Maine State Ferry Service serve Vinalhaven from Rockland, ME. Reservations are advised during the summer (make them one month in advance), otherwise, board on a first-come, first-served basis. Overnight lodging and restaurants are available.
