This luxury hotel in the Allegheny Mountains was constructed about a century ago, but its colonial architecture and decor reflect a much longer tradition than that, as the site has been used as a rustic resort since 1766. Famous for its golf, which has been a fixture since the 1890s, the resort also offers easy access to fine skiing. And there's an astounding variety of other activities, including horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking, bicycling. and fishing. And of course soaking in a spa filled by the hot springs that give the community its name.
If you go:
Note that room rates are rather pricey. If you're a connoisseur of golf, you'll be interested to know that Sam Snead had nearly lifelong ties to the resort. He was born near here, lived most of his life near here, and began his career at the resort as a caddy at age 7. The Sam Snead Tavern on the premises displays a great deal of memorabilia from his distinguished career.
