A very popular governor of Delaware from 1951 to 1855, William Henry Harrison Ross retired to this large estate featuring a mansion built in the Italian villa fashion of the day. A few years later, he had to flee to Europe to avoid arrest because he was a slave own and Confederate accomplice, while his home state swung the other way. The cottage his slaves lived in, previously moved to a different location and now returned to its original spot, is one of the more fascinating features of this painstakingly restored estate featuring several plantation structures. There are also special events including Civil War Reenactments, teas and musical performances.
If you go:
Open for tours only on weekends in the afternoon or by appointment. Modest admission charge. It's especially worth seeing the mansion in December when it's decorated for Christmas.
