Almost a mile wide and 570 feet deep, this is an impact crater in the middle of the northern Arizona desert. During the 1960s, NASA astronauts trained here. The crater also has been used for other research. Visitors can view and touch meteorites found in the area and learn more about this fascinating subject in the Interactive Discover Center plus in the 10-minute film shown twice an hour.

Follow the paved road off the exit for six miles south. The visitor center is open 8 to 5 daily. Extended hours in summer. Closed Christmas. Admission is $16/adult with discounts for seniors and children. No pets allowed. Admission includes access to three view points, an Interactive Discovery Center, a theater showing the movie "Collisions and Impacts" as well as a guided tour on the rim of the crater. Subway sandwich shop on premises. RV park and fuel station near the exit.
