The National Mall, a 1.9 mile long oasis of green space at the heart of the nation's capital, runs from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol and is flanked by numerous museums, memorials and monuments. Several annual events are held here, including the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and National Book Festival. The Mall's wide open space and high profile location has made it the focus of a number of major protests and rallies over the years, including the Jobs and Freedom march in 1963, where Martin Luther King gave his powerful and moving "I have a dream" speech.
