From the moment you spot the distinctive arrow sign outside, Apache Motel just oozes 1950s character. Back in the day, this was the No.1 place in town and past guests include John Wayne, Anthony Quinn, Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda and John Ford.

      If you go:
Unusually for this day and age, you get the best rates booking by phone. Today it provides a low cost but perfectly acceptable alternative to the chain hotels on Main Street, just a short stroll away. The rooms are clean and spacious, and there's a small but very nice pool.

We stayed here this past summer (2012). Very clean, the rooms ARE spacious, the pool was incredibly comfortable (very early August). It's off the beaten track, not on the main street of Moab at all, but close enough to amenities. The rooms have wi-fi, but I can't vouch for the signal since we had a non-working laptop by the time we got there (dead hard drive).
