The present day Capitol was built in 1850 after the first building on this site burned down just two years after it was built. While it's an attractive building in its own right, two points in history that make it an genuinely important landmark. It was here on Feb 18, 1861 that Jefferson Davis was inaugurated President of the Confederate States of America; and where, on March 25, 1965, thousands of civil rights protestors finally completed - at the third attempt - the Selma to Montgomery March.

      If you go:
The Capitol is open Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm for self-guided tours; guided tours by appointment only. Guided tours are held at 9, 11, 1 and 3 on Saturdays (use rear entrance); there are NO self-guided tours on Saturdays
