Once the estate of tobacco baron J.B. Duke, the property was inherited by his daughter Doris, a very generous philanthropist. In accordance with the terms of her will, it was converted into an environmental preservation, research and education center, open to the public free of charge. For its refreshing walks, its fascinating variety of plant life, its demonstration of sustainable environmental stewardship, and its remnants of its luxurious past, Duke Farms is well worth spending half a day or so.
If you go:
Closed on Wednesdays. Biking is a great way to see the property, and bike rentals are even offered. A shuttle operates around portions of the estate regularly. Duke Farms also welcomes roller blading, snow shoeing and cross country skiing
