Was this the source of the naming of the town? Does anyone know?

I had thought so, but it appears not if the tree wasn't planned until 1913.

Can someone confirm this is actually a giant sequoia? Giant sequoias seem very different to me. Their trunks are exposed and the tops are not pointy. Am I wrong?

This was explained in a Huell Howser episode of "California Gold" - Hard To Get To. It was explained by a ranger that "young" seqouias look like this. Very symmetrical in their "childhood". https://blogs.chapman.edu/huell-hows...nias-gold-411/
