The tiny community of Stanley (pop. fewer than 100) is at the heart of some of the most spectacular - and remote - country in the northwest. For the active visitor there are trails, lakes, rivers and mountains to hike, ride, ski, float, fish and climb. The stunningly beautiful scenery around these parts is reflected in the fact that Stanley is the starting (or finishing) point for not one, not two, but three scenic byways: Sawtooth (SR 75), Ponderosa Pine (SR 21) and Salmon River (SRs 75/93).
If you go:
There are various lodging and dining possibilities in Stanley; there's also a historical museum and, during the summer months, a visitor information center.
