Castroville was founded in 1844 by Henri Castro and others from Alsace, a region of Europe that has, over the centuries, alternated between French and German control (it has been part of France since 1945). Today this small community retains its Alsation identity - it is known as The Little Alsace of Texas - and boasts many historic building dating back to the mid 19th century.
If you go:
Follow the self-guided Historic Walking Tour, taking in more than 50 buildings including homes, churches, stores and a saloon, then finish up with traditional pastries at Haby's Alsatian Bakery (pictured).
