Situated on the shore of the Tidal Basin of the Potomac River, this classically-styled memorial to the third President was officially dedicated by President Roosevelt on 13 April 1943, 200 years after Jefferson's birth. A 19-ft statue of Jefferson looks out towards the White House, and the walls are inscribed with a selection of his writings. Its design, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, was controversial at the time some wanted a more modern-looking memorial but in 2007, it was ranked fourth on the 'List of America's Favorite Architecture.'
