Opened in 1964, Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel provides one of North America's most dramatic drives, soaring up over the Atlantic then descending deep beneath the waves. Opened in 1964, CBBT stretches southward from Virginia's Eastern Shore, traveling 17.6 miles before making landfall again at Hampton Roads. Man-made islands, each the size of Yankee Stadium, provide entry to the mile-long tunnel sections which create the breaks through which shipping can pass.
If you go:
Sea Gull Pier Restaurant on the most southerly island is a great place to stop, stretch you legs and watch the Naval warships cruise past.
