This simple monument commemorates the surrender on Sept 6th, 1886 of "Geronimo, last Apache chieftain and Nachite with their followers to General Nelson A. Miles." The plaque goes on to say 'The surrender of Geronimo in Skeleton Canyon on that historic day forever ended Indian warfare in the United States.' The road leading to Skeleton Canyon (where the surrender actually took place) turns east off Highway 80 a few hundred yards south of the memorial. Be aware that it's only suitable for four wheel drive vehicles and impassable in wet weather.
