Road Trip to Old Nevada by Mark Sedenquist
|
Instead of retracing the path I had taken north, I returned to Las Vegas by way of Highway 6 and State Route 318, a route that leads through the scenic White River Narrows. Well known to lovers of fast cars, this is the home of the Silver State Classic road race. Twice a year, the Nevada Highway Patrol closes a 90-mile section of the highway, suspends speed limits, and allows participants to drive the route at velocities of their own choosing.
As the Stratosphere Tower poked up over the horizon and I zoomed back into the 21st century, I was amazed that in only two days I had traveled eons into Nevada's geologic past and over a century into her fascinating history.
