US Highway 14/16/20, also known
as the Yellowstone Highway, runs from Cody,
Wyoming to Yellowstone National Park. Just outside
the city limits are three noteworthy roadside
attractions.
"Old Trail Town"
has a collection of western
memorabilia including the Hole-in-the-Wall gang's
cabin, thousands of historic artifacts and gravesites
of notable western explorers. Next to that is the
Cody Stampede,
which has hosted nightly rodeo
competition each summer since 1937. Just beyond
that are some geyser cones, the same sort of
formation as Yellowstone's famous "Old
Faithful," although the ones along this
highway no longer spout water.
The geyser cone shown above
and below is, according to local lore, the tallest
of its type in the world. We've been unable
to substantiate this claim, however, and we're
hoping that someone who reads this will be able
to provide some evidence that the oft-repeated
story is true. We do know that there are several
other large geyser cones in the area and plenty
of hot springs along the Shoshone River adjacent
to this highway. In addition, the Yellowstone
region is full of unique natural wonders. So,
tell us if you know -- is this geyser cone the
tallest in the world?
Location:
On the north side of US-Highway 14/16/20 just
west of the Cody Stampede Rodeo Grounds.
