FAMILY ON THE OREGON TRAIL

A pioneer family is pictured traveling on the Oregon Trail past Willamette Falls, which are about a block east of downtown present-day Oregon City. This mural was completed in 2001 by Roger Cooke. Mr. Cooke has painted murals all over the west. Oregon City is located about 13 miles south of Portland on the banks of the Willamette and Clackamas Rivers. Oregon City was the terminus of the Oregon Trail, and thousands of pioneer settlers passed this point in the 1840s. The McLoughlin House, built in 1850, was the first building to be designated a National Historic Site in the western states. It was opened as a museum in 1910. The End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is also located in Oregon City. A gorgeous photo of the Willamette Falls and the surrounding countryside can be seen in Gerald Thurman's Oregon Trail Field Report. The Oregon City Arts Community created "The Trail of Murals," which includes all the murals on McLouglin Blvd in the downtown district. This mural is located at 10th and Main in downtown Oregon City, on the northwest corner. Thanks to S.E. Hammond of Oregon City for providing location information! Update 8/09/24: We couldn't find the mural that used to be at this location. If you visit this location and find that the mural is still there, please contact us at rta@roadtripamerica.com and we will update this page. We hope you enjoy viewing these mural pages as much we did when we originally found them. – RTA Writers Group. |
