"The Birth of an Art Scene" was painted
in 2004 and is located across the street from Funk
House in the Las Vegas Arts District. The artist,
Andre Wilmore, is known by the single name of Dray.
Dray is a visual artist who has completed a number
of murals in the Las Vegas area. Some of his more
extraordinary paintings can be seen walking around
Fremont Street on Saturday evenings, but not on buildings.
Dray and fellow artist Orlando Lara paint colorful
designs on people's torsos.
The mural pictured above is called "Interpretive
Vision" and is located on the north side of the
Funk
House. In the words of the artist, it is "a
cubist montage celebrating historic and contemporary
culture of Las Vegas and commemorating the city's
100th birthday. I was commissioned by the city of
Las Vegas to paint it for the Centennial (1905-2005).
It was completed in 2005."
The Funk House was located at 1228 S. Casino Center
Blvd, in Las Vegas, Nevada, but has closed permanently.
