IRAQI FREEDOM
Twentynine Palms, California
Painting completed on December 19, 2003 by Don Gray of Oregon
Photographed by Gerald Thurman of Tempe, Arizona
Iraqi Freedom

Don Gray has been a professional artist for over thirty years. His murals are characterized by strong colors and vivid detail. This mural is the twentieth painting completed under the auspices of the City of Murals Project in Twentynine Palms, California. It was dedicated on January 31, 2004 and recognizes the marines and sailors from the Marine Corps Combat Center who participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom. This photograph is a detail of the larger work that also depicts two historic scenes: the toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue in Baghdad and the rescue of Shoshana Johnson and other POWs. The artist actually met the young marine he depicted in the painting above being carried off the field of battle.
