Dreaming Cowgirl mural by Jane Williams in Flagstaff, Arizona
Photographed by Gerald Thurman of Tempe, Arizona
Gerald Thurman

This intriguing mural is located on the wall of the Western Post liquor store at the corner of S. San Francisco Street and E. Phoenix Avenue in historic downtown Flagstaff. It is across the street from the Grand Canyon International Hostel, formerly known as the Downtowner Motel. The old "Downtowner" sign makes an easy reference point for finding this mural. We believe the artist is Jane Williams, a local muralist and performing musical artist who is also known as "Universalia Jane." According to her Web site, "…Universalia Jane is a supernatural thinker and a secret warrior priestess…" Completed in 2003, the mural captures the imagination, transporting the viewer into the dreams of a slumbering cowgirl.

Update 1/21/07: Craig Brown of Bellevue, Washington wrote to confirm that Jane Williams is the artist who painted this mural.

Update 8/09/24: There are murals in the historic downtown area, but we think this one is gone. If you visit this location and find that the mural is still here, please contact us at rta@roadtripamerica.com and we will update this page. We hope you enjoy viewing these mural pages as much we did when we originally found them. – RTA Writers Group.
