This mural, painted by Chris Kreider in 2003, depicts
Italian workers building the charcoal ovens in the Ward
Mining District near Ely, Nevada. In use from 1876 to
1879, these kilns transformed cords of wood into charcoal
which was then used to process silver. When coal-fired
furnaces became available, these ovens were phased out.
