Charcoal Ovens in Ely, Nevada
Photographed by Mark Sedenquist
Charcoal Kilns

This mural, painted by Chris Kreider in 2003, depicts Italian workers building the charcoal ovens in the Ward Mining District near Ely, Nevada. In use from 1876 to 1879, these kilns transformed cords of wood into charcoal which was then used to process silver. When coal-fired furnaces became available, these ovens were phased out. This mural is located on the side of the First National Bank of Ely at 595 Aultman Street. The city of Ely has over twenty murals depicting historical events in White Pine County. To see more of these beautiful murals click here.
