VIRGINIA & TRUCKEE RAILROAD ENGINE HOUSE & SHOPS
painted by Stephanie Taylor, Michael Hough, Cindy Mohler & Annie Darling in Carson City, Nevada
Contributed by Mark Sedenquist of Las Vegas, Nevada

This beautiful mural depicts the Virginia & Truckee Railroad engine #22 - the Inyo - leaving the historic Carson City Engine House that used to stand at 911 North Plaza Street near the Nevada State Capitol. The mural, which was painted in 1993, is located on the south wall of Heidi's Dutch Mill Restaurant, located at 1020 N. Carson Street. This train shop was used continuously for over 80 years and handled all of the servicing and repair of the V & T steam locomotives. At one time, 29 steam locomotives called this building home, and the machine shop fabricated and repaired equipment for mines, mills, lumber companies throughout Nevada and eastern California. In 1878, the shop employed over 150 workers. The facility was closed in May 1950, the structure was torn down in 1991.

The Inyo was recently feted as the Grand Marshal of the annual Nevada Day Parade. The photo below shows the locomotive leaving the Nevada State Railroad Museum to join the parade.
