If you started at San Francisco City Hall, you could reach this location in about an hour....(and your mode of conveyance was a car or or motorcycle). (And the weather and traffic gods were cooperating...)

(I can't tell you how painful it was to type that title line).
Could this be Alpine Road on the Penisula, closing in on Pescadero Road?
Leland's old school maybe getting the nod for the gridiron this season, but to find this mystery road you need to head north, (from San Francisco) into Marin County...

Not enough for me to distinguish exactly what road. It could easily be a stretch of 1 north of Stinson, or one of the roads that cross the county near Mt. Tamapais like Bolinas-Fairfax or Sir Francis Drake.
How does someone who lives in the UK has such a good geographic recall? How much time do you have logged traveling around the USA? It really is incredible! (Actually, I may have your user name cross-wired in my brain -- perhaps you're actually a native Americano and I'm thinking of someone else?)
Yes, I don't recall exactly where on the Bolinas-Fairfiax road this is, but here is a map that should get you pretty close!

Yep, you're mixing me up with someone else. Born, raised. and still live right across the Bay from Marin (Pinole, CA), and occasionally hike in the Mt Tam area off of Bolinas-Fairfax, plus the backroads of Marin are fun driving. In fact just two weeks ago, I took a final joyride in my Z that I'm selling throughout Marin (& Sonoma) county.
And just to answer the question, I've taken two cross country road trips (all pics I've posted have been mine) for a combined 3 months in '06 and '07. Before then I'd never driven farther east than Vegas.
OK, I am confused -- not that surprising actually -- but excellent work solving this location puzzle!

No clues at this stage as I reckon someone will get this one fairly quickly.

Where is it and who lived here?
But I imagine that some of our historically-minded members will know immediately.
