From Mark: That's pretty funny, that's what I was thinking too -- but the "dragons" on the wall didn't look quite right. Good job to Eris! Here's some more photos from there....

I guess Haleakala Volcano, Maui, Hawai'i.
The pavement in the near background and the apparent proximity of the structures at the summit suggest it's not Mauna Kea on the Big Island.

Pretty other-worldly shot.... I like it.

Where is this sign?
(CA Hwy 62 Iron Mnt Mileage Pole Photo by Gerald Thurman)
I moved the picture sideways : -)
It says “No Parking in Front of Horse Loading Ramp”
I was looking at the Big Island but credit to Foy who pointed the way.
Correct - it's Haleakala and I was very jealous of those going on the trek down into the crater!
I should offer up a tougher challenger someday!!
Mark, I fed all those distances in to my PC and it came up with this -- the Iron Mountain Sign Pole...
Okay, how about this one?
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3104/...f90356.jpg?v=0
It's on Utah Highway 12 about six miles east of US-Highway 89 on the approach to Red Canyon near Byrce Canyon National Park. (And I don't know why this is doing this weird format on the page)
And, of course, you are correct about the Iron Mountain pole!
I need to try harder to find a tough one! Yes... Route 12, Red Canyon. Well done!
I tried to get an idea of location by looking at the distances and then just typed in "Timmy's condo" as seen on the post and it led me straight to the location and the same link you have.
I think your photo is on scenic by way 12 at Red rock canyon heading towards Bryce canyon.

(Sailor Statue Photo by Gerald Thurman)
I have no idea which one it is, but it is one of these...
Craig, I would be willing to bet you've been to that exact spot....
Mark
My god, you're right, I have! Though in my defence it was soooooo foggy I probably didn't see it! Shame on me!!
In case anyone can't see the link, it is the Lone Sailor Statue above Fort Baker - the viewpoint where you can stop and see the Golden Gate Bridge (if there is no fog!)
How about this one?

Looks like a Moab kind of picture of the Colorado River!
Some way south of Moab
Nope. I have yet to set foot in the state of California.Quote:

I thought at first it could be the Colorado River at Rainbow Bridge (on a very low water day), but now I am guessing.... that you were standing near the bridge over the Colorado River at Hite Crossing in Utah?
Mark
(It's funny, I've seen this view....I think).
Some people will know where this is instantly.... Are you one of them?
(Buffalo Bill Photo by Gerald Thurman)
Craig,
Your recent travels were of course a great clue. That said, the garden-variety US National Park Service sign clues "US", and Haleakala, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa are about the only possibilities having terrain such as pictured.
The pic brings back great memories. I wish I hadn't been so "Jeep weary" and altitude-sick when I drove to the observatories at Mauna Kea in 2005. It's but a 300 yard walk to the summit from the parking area, but one loses about 100' then picks up about 150' on the pathway. Starting from 13,750', I just didn't have it in me! The drive through Parker Ranch and 2/3 of the way around Mauna Kea on the Mana Road was my favorite part of the week on the Big Island, though. Greasy mud two-track roads, rain forest, savannah, and "big sky" prairie: it was a truckin' redneck's Road Trip through Nirvana! We encountered but a handful of other vehicles along the 45 mile traverse from Waimea to The Saddle. If you're ever on the Big Island again, you must rent a Jeep and ignore the rental agency's prohibition regarding the Saddle Road. Driving the Mana Road and having the 4WD and low range transfer case to negotiate the gravel road to Mauna Kea are driving experiences one mustn't miss.

Darn! I'm much too late, but I would've known instantly. I have the same exact picture in my personal archives! I went to Bryce on my very first long solo roadtrip...ah, the good ol' days!:)
@Mark: The roller coaster seems familiar...I believe I've seen this on my way to Bagdad Café in Newberry Springs...it's somewhere in the Mojave but I couldn't point out the exact location.
I think the coaster is part of Buffalo Bill's Casino in Primm Nevada.
Seeing no one is getting the last photo I posted, here is another whilst we wait for someone who can guess it's location!
Update February 2024 (RTA): Buffalo Bill's coaster is no longer operating.
@UKCraig, Yep, that's the coaster at Primm, NV -- for a brief while it was the tallest coaster in the world.
You are going to have to give us a hint about the river photo.... Methinks.
Mark
Name of the building and location?
(Pittsburgh Building Photo by Gerald Thurman)
Wow - I have no idea about that building but it's an impressive looking place!
The river photo... guess it's driving everyone round the Bend. Well, I'm not gonna give any clues. Not until we make it to a fifth Page at least.
@UkCraig: a wild guess : Grand Staircase Escalante?? I am clueless about the location of that KFC ad though.
@Mark: I'm pretty sure I saw that building in Pittsburgh, but I don't know its name
edit: the building is named The City in the Sky
{Mark: Yes, it is! Also known as the PPG building in downtown Pittsburgh).

Oh come on... time to re Shoe the Horse here... think about it, people!
OK, so the hints would suggest Horseshoe Bend -- but how did a power boat get there? -- Although I guess you could drive up from Lake Powell like is shown here.
OK, you got us!

Well done Mark... Horseshoe Bend near Page Arizona. A breathtaking spot to watch the sunrise.
Do you need clues for the KFC too?
That sculpture is drawing a blank wth me -- is it near Yellowstone or the Tetons, maybe?
Strolled around Pier 39 (San Francisco) a few times and sat on the seating around this giant lobster for a well earned rest.
Never thought about the reason it is there – suppose there is one.
Who lived in this house? No 32 is my clue.
