I think the couple in our spot were winging it to be honest, arriving late and leaving early unnoticed, that's the impression I got. The family who's spot we were in were great and we swapped stories over coffee in the morning.Quote:

I get the impression that they may be slightly less trafficked when compared to the uber touristy California/Nevada/Arizona/Oregon/Washington area??
As you may know, we like to travel in the Fall close to the tail end of the season and from that point of view I didn't notice a lot of difference. I just presume that during the high season with anywhere this good, one is going to get as busy as the other. [Urban sprawls apart]Quote:

It was bit chilly ! Although we were well prepared I believe that was a record low for the time of year, it was well below average. Day time temps were in the mid 60's in RMNP at the lower elevations and was ideal for hiking.
It wouldn't surprise me if it was as busy in the summer as the other places you mentioned, generally speaking. There are many popular places of interest with great towns and scenery, but I am only basing it on my trips in the Fall. I would think the beginning of Sept would be a good compromise but this year did throw up some early winter weather.
Maybe a summer traveller can answer the question better ?

Ah, that's a shame. Since my Aussie trip I have realised how much I value a bit of peace and quiet and space in general. It does remain on my list for the future but, until I've gotten over that, it will probably remain as such. I already have plans for one trip to a busy area (the popular Seattle through San Fran, LA, Vegas to San Diego route) for next summer and it'll be nice to do something a little more sedate the following year :)
