Thanks Judy. The major rental companies websites freak out a bit when I ask for Mid-August to end of October, so I think it's going to be a case of ringing them up for quotes.
However, I will *NOT* let this stop me. There must be some way to have a car for 2 and a half months and not take it back to where I collected it.

Well, it looks like Dollar are going to be the best deal. I spoke to a lovely lady in Tulsa who talked me through costs and then suggested the best deal would be to do through their tour operator partners Virgin Holidays.
I've spoken to them and they have come up with a deal for flights, three days hotel at the start of the trip then 72 days car hire LA to NYC in a convertible for a total cost of around £3,500.
Considering some companies wanted to charge more than that for the car hire alone, I think that's a pretty sweet deal.

Folks,
I thought I'd wrap this thread up by pointing you to the Reports forum where I have started a thread about the 3 month trip I took this summer, including this mammoth one-way rental and how I killed the hire car.
My report thread is here... http://www.roadtripamerica.com/forum...1120#post91120
