Indeed, there are some good suggestions posted. If you really like "odd" things as you say, check out Carhenge. Yes, CARhenge. An artist decided to make a life-sized recreation of Stonehenge out of rusted cars. It's both bizarre and cool and should be high up on any "odd" scale. It's just outside the town of Alliance in western Nebraska, and should be roughly on your way from Iowa to Colorado.
What's the planned root? I'm assuming you'll be taking I-80 then into I-76? If that's the case, prepared to be bored west of Lincoln until Denver. Honestly, I think this is one of the most boring stretches in the US that I've been on. I've done it several times, and it never gets better. Depending where in Iowa your at, I'm sure you could make it to Denver without an overnight stop if you want.
You are new on the Forum, so you may not know, but there are no boring places -- only unaware travelers. I have driven more than 500,000 miles in North America and have never found any boring places.Quote:

So we're still working on this roadtrip to Colorado. And I was wondering what the cost/benefit is for renting a car to take on the roadtrip vs. driving a car one of us owns. Our current car options are Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Neon, Ford Tauras (probably not running well enough to be a choice at this point). There are 4 of us going so either the jeep or the dodge would be a tight fit with people and luggage. So we've thought about renting a vehicle. What is people's opinion or experience regarding this matter?
