That's the best way to do it - south early in the season and north in the height of summer. Be careful with your planning, the month and a half will be gone before you know it! Coast to coast and back, traversing both coasts may be biting off a bit more than you can chew.

I was hoping we can use campgrounds outside of the national parks if need be. I'm sure there are a lot of lodging options, free or not.
