That would give you 5 days to get from the GC to Chicago - because Chicago to Cleveland is a fairly easy 1 day drive via I-90. By fastest route, GC to Chicago is a 3 day drive, so you have some, but not a lot, of time to play with.

Here's one suggestion - leave the GC via the east entrance to US-89, go north to US-160 to Kayenta, then US-163 into Monument Valley. Take a Jeep tour. Take US-191 north and spend the night in Blanding or Monticello.

Take US-491 to Cortez, then US-160 to Durango. Take US-550 (the Million Dollar Highway) to Montrose, then US-50 to Poncha Springs, spend the night in Salida.

Take US-285/24 through Leadville to I-70, go east to US-40, take that over Berthoud Pass to Granby, then US-34 through Rocky Mountain National Park (Trail Ridge Road) through Estes Park to Loveland, spend the night.

Take US-34 to I-76 to I-80 and spend the night around Omaha, then on to Chicago the next day.

    Default You need a map

Get a good map of the country, and have a look at what there is between those two places. The options are into the thousands, and varied. Only you can decide which you prefer.

On RTA (and the wider webb) you will find a lot of information on all the National Parks, State Parks, National Monuments and the many other attractions.

Thanks GLC, we did some more research over the weekend and that sounds like an amazing road trip to Chicago and very manageable at the same time.

Our road trip is now looking like this:-

    4th sept- San Francisco
    5th- San Francisco
    6th-Yosemite
    7th- Yosemite
    8th- Furnace Creek
    9th- Grand Canyon
    10th- Grand Canyon
13th-18th (Travel from Grand canyon to Chicago most probably using GLC`s route)
    18th- Chicago
    19th -Chicago
    20th- Cleveland
    21st- Cleveland
    22nd- Niagra Falls (Canada)
    23rd- Niagra Falls (Canada)
    24th- ?
    25th- ?
    26th- Possibly Boston
    27th- New York
    28th- New York
    29th- New York
    30th- Fly Home

Is there a route anybody would advise to take from Niagra Falls to Boston? Again the scenic route would be what we`re looking for.

    Default Alternative routing.

Following on from glc's route. Instead of going up to Monticello you could take the 'short cut' through Montezuma creek and Aneth to Cortez or Durango, perhaps add a detour to Four corners for the obligatory photo of hands and feet in each of the Four states. If you are doing OK for time when you get on I70 after Leadville, you could 'hop off' again at Dillon onto US 6 through Keystone and drive across the continental divide over the spectacular Loveland pass at close to 12000ft.

An alternative to the suggested route would be to continue north on 191 through Monticello to Moab, home to Arches and Canyonlands NP's. You could then head on 128 through Castle valley to I70 where you will be close to Colorado NM when you near Fruita CO.

    Both are pretty spectacular !

  5. Default Niagra Falls Canada to New York via Boston

Any suggestions on a scenic road trip for this route? We leave Niagra Falls on the 24th of September and are due to arrive in New York on the morning of the 27th and are thinking to have a nights stay in Boston on the 26th.

Mod note] Please do not create multiple threads for this trip and keep all questions here, thank you.

    Default They're all marked

Are you aware that on all maps and in road atlasses, scenic routes are marked with a dotted line beside them. Why not check your maps (not digital!), and choose one of those routes. Someone here is bound to have been on it, and may give some feedback.

Ok so we have just 2 weeks to go before we embark on our roadtrip! Thanks to all your helpful advice we have pretty much decided on our route to take. The only part we are not 100% sure on is our drive from Niagara Falls to New York City. We have 3 full days to get to New York, we would like to have a pretty relaxed drive taking in the stunning scenery on the way.
We were thinking to take route 20 and spend a night in Seneca Falls then travel through the beautiful Catskill Mountains and spend a night, then travel to somewhere on the outskirts of New York to leave us with a short drive into New York the next day. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

    Thanks

Are you not planning to visit Boston anymore?

With 3 days, that might be best, and what you are talking about seems like a pretty reasonable plan.

These threads could give you a few more ideas to consider.

No we decided that after driving so far and travelling into a few big cities it might be wise to take a nice relaxing drive to New York City.
