It was the fantastic TV documentaries which lured me to Lake Eyre in the first place. Great documentaries by the best of journalists, illustrated by experienced cameramen and facilitated by incredibly skilled helicopter pilots. And none were better than the team from the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). With close on a century of experience between them, they covered cyclones and floods, bush fires and earthquakes as well as natural wonders such as Lake Eyre. Their documentaries are shown over and over again.
Last night, about 150 kms north of Maree, just as they were on their way to make an update film of Lake Eyre, the helicopter crashed. In this remote area, there was no way to reach the site, other than by helicopter, and at daylight it was confirmed that there were no survivors.
As beautiful as the outback is, it is indeed, a harsh environment.
