  1. Default My 3 month roadtrip across the states

My girlfriend and I are going to lease a car in the states this May and going to drive from LA to NY, taking about 3 months give or take a few weeks. Any tips or critique that you esteemed gentlemen and ladies would like to offer?

Here is a rough outline of my route.

I plan on visiting San Fran either before picking up the car, or driving there after. I also plan on dropping off the car in NY, then travelling around a little bit like Niagara and Boston etc.

I am glad you are not believing the estimate on the map routing program-- because that route would require 11 hours of hard travel per day to cover it in 17 days. The route does a pretty good job of covering the eastern part of the USA -- but I am surprised that you will not be going to the NW, the western states and the mid-west. Will that be in another road trip sometime later?

Yeah, I mean I'd love to do it all. But I would probably be there for a year if I tried. After the states we are moving onto Europe and going to see that part of the world for a year or two (while we work in England).

What states in the mid-west would you recommend?

Well, I could recommend a number of places, but I think you should stick to your plan -- it will afford plenty of travel!

As Mark pointed out, you move through the west and midwest to spend considerable distance, and presumably time, in the east. That's fine, and I realize that it's a 'rough outline', but you come close to quite a few unique locations without actually going to them. I just want to make sure you realize how close you get to Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, Arches National Park, Mesa Verde, and Rocky Mountain National Park. Hitting all these would mean missing Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and choices must be made, but it would be a shame to miss them.

Thanks mate. I had planned to go to the Grand Canyon and Death Valley, but hadn't thought to put it on the route. Thank you for the links to the others.
