  1. Default San Francisco ---> New York

    Hi All,

My friend is moving to New York and we are planning on driving there from San Francisco during the First week of February along the following route. I know it's a lot of driving, but I'm more concerned about weather conditions: can we expect blizards? Might we need snow chains? Any suggestions are welcome...

    This is our planned route:

day 1: SF - Lake Havesu (AZ)
day 2: Lake Havesu (AZ) -Grand Canyon - Albuquerque (NM)
day 3: Grand Canyon - Albuquerque (NM)
day 4: Albuquerque (NM) - Oklahoma City (OK)
day 5: Oklahoma City (OK) - Memphis (TN)
day 6: Memphis (TN) - ? Bristol (TN)
day 7: ? Bristol (TN) - Washington (DC)
day 8:Washinton (DC) - New York (NY)

    Thanks!

    Pieter

Welcome to the Forum! You do know that the most direct and least-weather-affected route would be I-80? I am not clear why you would route through Lake Havasu -- do you have friends there or you want to see the bridge or??

As far as chains go -- yes, I would carry them. I would suggest you read these tips and be prepared for winter weather. Other than that, you will be fine. You can cover that distance easily in 5-6 days, so eight days will be fine.

  3. Default Reasons

We chose this route so we could go to the Grand Canyon and also see my grandmother in Albuquerque. As far as why we are stopping in Lake Havasu, well we wanted to get as far a possible the first day and also see London Bridge. Plus that only leaves 4 hours to Grand Canyon the next day and we will have more time to hike the canyon.

I am not sure what condition you will be in for hiking after driving 600 miles the day before -- but maybe it does make some sense. OK -- it does seem relatively reasonable.
