Welcome to the Forum! My local information is out of date, but hopefully one of the NY-area contributors will check in later today.

My son is in NYC right now and I did a bunch of research to help him plan his trip.

He's staying at The Americana Inn (www.crshotels.com). The rate is only $75/night. He said it's kinda shabby but very clean and conveniently located to a lot of attractions, close to subway stops, etc. It is in Manhattan roughly 1/2 way between the Broadway Theater District and the Empire State Building.

It does have a shared bathroom. I think one bathroom for every 3-4 rooms. However, he hasn't had any trouble getting into it and he says it is clean as well. This is something that is quite common in Europe but we're not so used to it here. They do have a sink in the room. I've stayed in places with shared baths in England and it was no biggee.

We also looked into staying at the YMCA. I didn't save the link but I believe you can do a search on NYC YMCA and find the info. They have lodging in several of their facilities and most of them sounded pretty nice to me.

    Madison Hotel
    62 Madison Avenue

Aladin Hotel on 45th Street, conveniently located near Times Square
    ~35$/night dormitory
    ~75$/night private room
    shared bathroom

    Wolcott Hotel
    4 W 31st St
~120$/night private room with private bathroom

    Holland Motor Lodge
    Holland Tunnel Plaza E
    Jersey City
rates start at 61$/night incl continental breakfast

    Econo Lodge
    750 Tonnelle Ave

I didn't personally go to these places, but people told me about some of them and I picked some ideas on the net too. So bear in mind that these are not recommandations, just suggestions!
