Going to San Marcos Tx from Long Island NY

Hey everyone, any information is welcomed and much appreciated...hitting PA, VA, TN, AK, AND TX....whats good? anyplace untouristy is of much interest....thrift stores...good resturants...bars with decent music?

First, The Great Smoky Mountains Natl Park. Then, Nashville, (Music Row and 16th Avenue, etc), Memphis (barbecue and the blues) and then make a little side trip to Hot Springs, AR for a soak.
