Newberry Springs is the home to the world's only Pistachio Festival. It happens the first saturday of November and is located at the Newberry Springs community center near Newberry Springs road and Route 66 (east of Barstow). Newberry Springs calls itself the "Pistachio Capital of the High Desert"
and the mineral content of the local water supply is reputed to give the local pistachio nuts their yummy flavor.
I stopped by today and sampled wonderful BBQ prepared by the local firefighters, tried some of the various pistachio flavors -- smoked, cajun, lemon herb and salted seemed to be the most popular versions. Local artisans were displaying a variety of crafts, and local bands were performing. So, if you find yourself on Route 66 (near Barstow, California) on the first weekend in November -- check this out!
