Default San Francisco to Los Angeles

I'm leaving San Francisco on October 18 and have to be in LA on the afternoon of October 21. What would be the best route to see the sights and is there moderately price accomodation along the way. Were from Sydney Aust. so not sure of anything in this area.

Welcome to the Forum. If you were to drive the coastal route, this distance requires about 10 hours of driving and so 2-3 days will make this very enjoyable. The best roadtrip guide I have ever found is the one written by Paige Penland and she does a truly exceptional job of finding accomodations for all sorts of budgets.

The coastal route from SF to LA is gorgeous! You won't regret spending your entire time along that route. Hearst Castle in San Simeon and the beautiful architecture of Santa Barbara are two of my favorite places there. And, of course, the many beautiful beaches.

a little late... but all i remember is that if you take 1, you get the great coastal view, but it's a lot longer drive. but if you take 5, youre more inland and shorter. everytime i drove down to so cali, i took 5 and didnt do much of sightseeing....

Make sure your car can take the grapevine outside of LA .... have fun :)

There's a difference between 1 & 101. In between San Luis Obispo and SFO, the highways split apart. 101 is a little faster. Of, course, like another poster said, highway 5 is the fastest. It depends, on how fast you want to get there.

    Enjoy your trip.
