  2. Default Time?

What's possible depends on how much time you have.

In a perfect world, I'd go by way of the Texas Hill Country, San Antonio, Big Bend National Park, Carlsbad Caverns, Ruidoso (Museum of the Horse) and Lincoln County (Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War); then down through White Sands Natl Monument and to El Paso if you wish (I'd skip El Paso and Juarez, personally, too many other things to do).

Follow SR9 west to SR80, stay at the Copper Queen Hotel in Bisbee (or the Shady Dell Trailer Park Motel, even MORE fun). Then see Tombstone, the Chiricahua National Monument, Fort Bowie, Kartchner Caverns, Sonoita and Patagonia, Madera Canyon, San Xavier del Bac Mission (Tucson), Kitt Peak Observatory (daytime tours only), then finish the trip by way of Phoenix or continue across the southern route to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and into Los Angeles via Julian and Temecula.

Another possibility is to head a bit farther north at some point and see some of the great places along I-40 and old Route 66.

I have NO clue how much time it would take to do all of these things, but if you're interested, we can figure that out.
