I'm goin' South: Texas, New Orleans, Florida, South Carolina

Anyone have any suggestions for things to do, particularly in Texas or anywhere in between these states and areas? We are open to any type of museums, exhibits, events, or fun that we can have.

Some of my past favorites in Texas have been the 6th Floor Museum in Dallas -- and Dealey Plaza. If you're younger and don't know what this is, it is the location from which Oswald shot Kennedy. Dealey Plaza is where it occurred.

The Alamo at San Antonio is awesome and there was a Six Flags park there as well, and the USS Lexington museum at Corpus Christi. I think the LBJ St Hist Park would be worth a visit (near Johnson City). Spend some time downtown along the Riverwalk.

Next time I get to Texas I intend to visit Big Bend National Park, which has been highly recommended by others on this forum. Bob

TEXAS: - San Antonio - Alamo / Missions driving tour / Riverwalk

- Big Bend National Park !!!

- Fort Worth Historic Stockyards, & go to a rodeo or horse show.

- if going over that far - Carlsbad Caverns National Park (just on the border of New Mexico/Texas)

NEW ORLEANS area: - take a swamp tour (boat, not airboat). Great photos, informative interesting.

Go to at least one PLANTATION / historic home that is open for tours.

Biloxi / Gulfport is a nice drive between states.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Many nice little towns. CHARLESTON for historic homes / plantations, etc - but it is an expensive city.

All of the aforementioned suggestions are on target -- Dealy Plaza in Dallas, the Alamo in San Antonio, the swamp boat tours...I would recommend them all. I would add that I would strongly recommend an air boat swamp tour (not a boat swamp tour). My husband and I took one year before last and it was GREAT -- talk about exciting and fun! Many of the swamp tour agencies have shuttles that will pick you up at your hotel in New Orleans and take you to the swamp. I would also recommend the Oak Alley Tour for the ultimate in Southern Plantation Tours--you'll never see more beautiful trees than the ones at Oak Alley. They also serve mint juleps. Also, if you take the free ferry across the Mississippi from New Orleans to Algiers, you can visit Mardi Gras World. A shuttle picks you up in Algiers and takes you to Mardi Gras World where you can see a huge warehouse filled with Mardi Gras floats. The tour is great! You are even treated to a serving of the traditional New Orleans King Cake. Just remember that it takes longer to get back to the ferry via shuttle, since the shuttle accommodates only a few. However, the wait isn't bad. Have a great time on your trip!

Don't forget north Louisiana. Lots or plantations along the Cane River a little south of Natchitoches. Also the American Rose Society has its gardens in Greenwood (outside of Shreveport). Shreveport is also one of the largest gambling centers in the US. There are 5 or 6 riverboats, great cuisine, and you can leave the Shreveport area via Highway 80 and drive through the historic Texas towns of Marshall and Longview (both have wonderful downtown areas).
